When Johnny loses his job at the end of summer, he avoids letting anyone know about it. In fact he spends what little money he has on gifts and dinners for the family. The stress eventually gets to him. When he sees Simon teaching Derrick how to fix his bike, Johnny snaps as he sees his fatherly role being taken away from him as well. Emotions run high, Johnny's temper rises and he lashes out at Simon, causing Ava to step in and break up the confrontation. Ava pulls Johnny aside and tells him to get a grip. Johnny dismisses Ava and quickly leaves, pretending he is going to work. After Johnny departs a delivery man drops off the contents of his desk from his office. Ava now realizes the truth and immediately goes out looking for Johnny. She finds him alone at the beach. He tells her he has a job offer in Dallas. Ava lovingly tells him she doesn't want him to go. Later, Johnny runs across the beach to Ava's side. He tries to tell her he wants to throw everything bad from their past into the fire and start new. But, he gets pulled away before she can respond. Johnny is also unaware that Simon has already asked Ava to be a part of his future.
